MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (June 7, 2006) – The Classic Golf Group announced the promotion of Thomas W. Smothers to general manager and Wayne Welden as the new director of marketing. Smothers’ duties include managing the Group’s corporate and club operations, overseeing operating budgets, marketing efforts and food and beverage operations. Welden’s responsibilities include overseeing all marketing efforts for each of The Classic Golf Group’s five golf courses – Black Bear, Indian Wells, Burning Ridge, Crown Park and the new Pawleys Island golf course, which will open in early 2007.

Smothers joined The Classic Golf Group team in January 2002 as the assistant golf professional at Sea Gull Golf Club where he was involved in all aspects of the club’s operations including customer service, tournament operations, revenue and expense budgeting, staff scheduling and supervision and merchandising. In March of 2004, Smothers was appointed as The Classic Golf Group’s business and finance director and was responsible for all finance and administrative functions in the company.

Before joining The Classic Golf Group, Smothers was the owner of S.O.S. Computer Solutions in Myrtle Beach, S.C., a computer consulting and internet service operation, before selling to a national internet company.

Welden has worked in the Myrtle Beach golf industry since 1985 and was most recently the general manager at the International Club. He served as the director of golf at Man O’ War for nine years before joining The Classic Golf Group.

"We are excited to have Tommy and Wayne as members of our Classic Golf Group team," said Rowland Thomas, one of the owners of The Classic Golf Group. "The knowledge that Tommy brings from not only the financial industry but the golf industry as well makes him an asset to our company. Wayne’s valuable experience in managing a golf course, as well as in marketing, public relations and accounting, will help us continue to provide exceptional golf experiences to our members and guests."
