(June 9, 2006) – Michael Campbell has confirmed he will defend his title at the 2006 HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club, September 14-17.
Campbell’s confirmation comes ahead of his US Open title defence next week where, in 2005 he announced a return to his best form by securing his first Major title. Qualifying as defending Champion of the HSBC World Match Play Championship having defeated Paul McGinley 2 & 1 in the final last year, Campbell joins World Number 1, Tiger Woods, and current European Order of Merit leader, David Howell, in accepting their places in the 16-man field.
Thrilled to be returning to compete for the richest first prize in world golf of #1 million and the Mark McCormack Trophy, Campbell said: "I am delighted to be returning to Wentworth in September to defend my HSBC World Match Play Championship title. After the thrill of winning my first Major at the US Open, it was really important to me that I followed it up by winning another significant title. Lifting the HSBC World Match Play Championship trophy fitted the bill perfectly with a list of past Champions that reads like a Who’s Who of Major winners. Seeing my name on the McCormack Trophy alongside the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Ernie Els is very special. Also, after a long season of stroke play events, I am looking forward to the cut and thrust of the match play format."
