In Addition to Competing for $500,000 in Prizes, Participants Can Also Become the New Host of The Wandering Golfer or Win All-Expense Paid Trip to Scotland
June 12, 2006, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Golfers still have time to register for the PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship and save $35 prior to the event’s early entry deadline on Monday, July 10. The World Am will limit the 23rd Annual World Am entries to 4,250 participants with the current registration for the "World’s Largest Amateur Single-Site Golf Tournament" standing at 2,692, almost 10% more than last year’s total at this time.
Registration for the world’s largest amateur golf tournament, to be played along Myrtle Beach’s famed Grand Strand from August 28 through September 1, is $480 prior to the early entry deadline. Golfers can enter online at www.WorldAmGolf.com or by calling 1-800-833-8798. After the July 10 expiration date, the registration fee is $515.
Entry into the tournament includes four rounds of golf and a gift bag with more than $150 worth of merchandise. The entry fee also provides the golfer and guest with a pass to the World’s Largest 19th Hole, the tournament’s nightly party in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center that features food, an open bar, live entertainment and a golf expo. The 40,000 square-foot PGA TOUR Superstore will feature merchandise from leading golf equipment and apparel manufacturers; as well as game improvement areas, skill contests and games for participants and guests to enjoy. Participants compete for the right to be crowned "World Champion" and have a chance to win more than $500,000 in prizes given away at the tournament.
Returning to the tournament in 2006 is the Centex Homes "Villa Quest" where one talented golfer will walk away with the keys to a brand-new $150,000 Myrtle Beach golf villa in one of Centex Homes’ premier Grand Strand communities, Berkshire Forest. Valued at approximately $150,000, the villa will be awarded to the World Am golfer who sinks a 10-foot putt Thursday night at the 19th Hole. All golfers are eligible to win the villa and the event begins Tuesday with a closest-to-the pin contest in each flight.
New in 2006 is the United States Qualifier of the International Pairs Championship where World Am contestants compete as a twosome for the opportunity to win an all-expense paid trip to St. Andrews to represent the United States in the 2007 International Pairs World Finals.
World Am golfers will also have the opportunity to submit video applications for FINE LIVING’s search for a new host of The Wandering Golfer. The new Wandering Golfer will host all 13 episodes of the show’s third season, tentatively slated to air in the spring of 2007. This opportunity is a "dream job" for any golfer with a passion for the game – to be paid to travel the globe and play his or her favorite sport at the sport’s most revered courses. Retiring host Chad Maulsby will serve as the Honorary Chairperson of the 2006 PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship and will be on hand at the 19th Hole to meet golfers and offer tips on impressing the contest judges.
"The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is the Every Day Golfers’ U.S. Open," said Steve Mays, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s tournament director. "The early entry deadline offers tremendous value for participants and gives golfers plenty of time to make their travel plans for the most exciting World Am yet."
The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is played on more than 66 Grand Strand courses and is open to any amateur golfer with a verified United States Golf Association handicap or the foreign equivalent for international players. Players are flighted according to their handicap.
The 23rd annual tournament is expected to draw 4,000 participants, including players from all 50 states and more than 23 foreign countries. Nearly 100 golfers play in each of the approximately 50 flights, with the flight winners advancing to compete in the 18-hole world championship playoff hosted at the renowned Dunes Golf and Beach Club
