Vijay Singh Captures Barclays Classic for Record Third Time; Top 11 Finishers Trust Titleist Golf Balls.
Fairhaven, MA (June 12, 2006) – By placing their trust in Titleist, the world’s best players expect success. And at the Barclays Classic, the performances continued to live up to expectations.
World No. 3 and Pro V1x golf ball loyalist Vijay Singh edged Titleist ambassador and World No. 6 Adam Scott (Pro V1, Pro Titanium 905R driver, Pro Trajectory prototype 3- and 5-woods, Forged 695MB irons, Vokey Design Spin Milled sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron putter) by two shots to earn his 29th career PGA Tour crown at the same site in which he earned his first title 13 years ago. Singh is the first player to win the Barclays Classic three times.
Singh topped a world-class leaderboard on which Titleist golf ball players occupied each of the first 11 positions. Following Singh and Scott were: Billy Andrade (T3/Pro V1), Titleist full-line staff players Brett Quigley (T3/Pro V1, Pro Titanium 905R driver, Pro Trajectory 904F 3-wood, Forged 704.CB irons, Vokey Design prototype sand wedge and Spin Milled lob wedge, Scotty Cameron prototype putter), Tom Pernice, Jr. (T5/Pro V1x, Pro Titanium 905S driver, Forged 755 prototype irons, Vokey Design Spin Milled sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Futura putter) and Fredrik Jacobson (T5/Pro V1x, Pro Titanium 905S driver, Pro Trajectory prototype 3-wood, Prototype 585 utility wood, Forged 695CB irons, Vokey Design approach and lob wedges), Jeff Sluman (T5/Pro V1), Luke Donald (T5/Pro V1x), Titleist ambassador Jason Bohn (T9/Pro V1x, Pro Titanium 905R driver, Pro Trajectory 904F 3-wood, Forged 670 irons, Vokey Design sand wedge and Spin Milled lob wedge, Scotty Cameron Xperimental C5 prototype putter), Mathew Goggin (T9/Pro V1x), and Ian Poulter (T9/Pro V1x).
Overall, more than 70 percent of the field trusted Titleist golf balls at the Barclays Classic, outnumbering the nearest competitor by a 110-14 margin. Titleist was also the choice of more players than any other brand in the wedge (118) and putter (49) categories. Titleist irons (29) and Pro Titanium drivers (38) were a strong second.
The win was the 12th for Titleist golf ball players on the PGA Tour this season, twice the nearest competitor with 6.
With his runner-up finish at the Barclays Classic, Adam Scott has now placed in the top four in each of his last four tournaments (Memorial/T4, Byron Nelson Championship/T3, Wachovia Championship/3rd).
Additional victories on the PGA European and Nationwide Tours advanced the 2006 Titleist golf ball victory count to 72, more than five times the nearest competitor with 13.
PGA EUROPEAN TOUR: Austrian Markus Brier’s dream came true this week, winning his first career PGA European Tour title, the BA-CA Golf Open presented by Telekom Austria, in front of his family and friends at his home course, the Fontana Golf Club. Brier, who relies upon the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, fired four consecutive rounds in the 60’s to finish at 18-under 266, edging runner-up Soren Hansen (Pro V1x) by three strokes. Simon Dyson (Pro V1x) was another stroke back in solo third to give Titleist another 1-2-3 finish. Brier opened with a 65 on Thursday that included a hole-in-one.
Titleist golf ball players accounted for 84 percent of the field with 131, more than 13 times the nearest competitor with 10. The win is the 17th for Titleist golf ball players this year on the PGA European Tour, more than five times the nearest competitor with 3.
LPGA TOUR: With 119 players, more than 79 percent of the field played Titleist golf balls at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship, compared to 15 players for the nearest competitor. Mi Hyun Kim (Pro V1) tied for third at 7-under, while Shi Hyun Ahn (Pro V1x), Pat Hurst (Pro V1) and Cristie Kerr (Pro V1) tied for fifth at 6-under.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Full-line Titleist staff player Jason Dufner (Pro V1x, Pro Titanium 905R driver, Pro Trajectory prototype 3-wood, Forged 660 irons, Vokey Design prototype approach and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Xperimental C5 prototype putter) fired a final round 1-under par to edge Cliff Kresge (Pro V1) by one stroke and win the LaSalle Bank Open, his first victory since 2001.
Like Titleist’s golf ball success at the PGA Tour’s Barclay’s Classic, each of the top 11 players on the LaSalle Bank Open’s leaderboard relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the LaSalle Bank Open by a 120 to 11 margin. Titleist was also the choice of more players than any other brand in the iron (46), wedge (143) and putter (77) categories. Titleist Pro Titanium drivers and Titleist Pro Trajectory fairway metals were a strong second with 45 and 48, respectively.
The win is the 10th for Titleist golf ball players through the first 12 events on the 2006 Nationwide Tour.
