Winner of McDonald’s LPGA Championship Taps in For Birdie on 1st Playoff Hole for Victory
CARLSBAD, Calif. (June 12, 2006) – After only 10 weeks since introduction to professional golf, the TaylorMade® Tour Preferred® (TP) golf ball have earned it’s first victory at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, Md. The TaylorMade TP golf ball was first played on the PGA Tour at Augusta in April by Sergio Garcia. Since then, hundreds of professional golfers have put the TaylorMade TP Redâ?¢ and TP Blackâ?¢ into play on tours worldwide.
The TaylorMade TP balls have been engineered with a brand new core chemistry called NdV4 Super-Core Technology. This core is designed to give the player more ball speed than many competitive balls in the tour category. Faster ball speed equates to longer drives.
"To make the TP Red and TP Black significantly faster, we had to find a faster core material, but one soft enough to minimize driver spin," said Dean Snell, senior director of R&D for TaylorMade and Maxfli. "We succeeded with NdV4, a neodymium-based rubber compound that combines ultra-high COR and exceedingly low compression. The result is accelerated speed, low driver-spin and soft sound and feel. Independent tests revealed the TP Redâ?¢ and TP Blackâ?¢ to be consistently faster than many competitive balls in the tour category."*
The TP ball is also designed for superior spin around the greens and off the irons by way of an ultra-thin thermoset cast urethane cover. TaylorMade’s proprietary and patented thermoset cast urethane cover delivers a tour-caliber blend of spin, soft feel and superior durability. Thermoset cast urethane is created by mixing numerous ingredients that react chemically, generating heat and which combine to create a new material that’s stronger than the sum of its parts.
The winner of the LPGA’s second major in 2006 demonstrated both power off the tee and dialed in iron play by averaging 266 yards off the tee and hitting nearly three out of four greens in regulation.**
"Tour validation is always a part of the equation," says Sean Toulon, TaylorMade executive vice president of product and brand creation. "Tour players are very particular with which golf ball they choose to put in play. It speaks volumes to the quality of the TP balls that the best players in the world are embracing the TP ball by putting it in play in numbers on the world’s tours and now by winning a major championship."
The TP Red and TP Black each carry a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $55 per dozen and are available at TaylorMade’s retail partners.
* Robot testing by Golf Labs Inc. Average of 12 shots using set up conditions so as to generate an initial ball speed for the of 177 mph and spin-rate of approximately 2,800 rpm at a launch angle of 10.6 degrees using a TaylorMade r7(r) quad driver having a loft of 9.5 degrees.
