All Funds Raised will Benefit the Sutter VNA and Hospice

ORINDA, Calif. – On Friday, June 23, 2006, PGA Master Professional Shim La Goy of Orinda Country Club, will help celebrate the centennial of Sutter VNA & Hospice by playing a minimum of 100 holes of golf in a day. Individuals may pledge $.25 per hole or greater in support of the event. The benefactor of the marathon will be Sutter Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) & Hospice Foundation, celebrating its 100th year of home health care and hospice service to patients in the region. La Goy will start at sunrise on the No. 1 tee at Orinda Country Club and will continuously play until the lofty goal is reached or till daylight runs out.

Orinda Country Club recently hosted the 16th Annual Merv LaFaille Hospice Golf Classic, so La Goy, the PGA head professional at the club, offered to play 100 holes to assist in the agency’s fundraising efforts. During the LaFaille Hospice Golf Classic participants began pledging support as a means to gain public awareness on the 100-hole marathon. "Orinda Country Club members have a long history of helping others," stated La Goy. "I am confident our club members along with others in the community will help lend support to this worthy cause."

La Goy, a 28-year member of the PGA of America, played a similar marathon in 1981 for National Golf Day, an annual effort by the PGA of America to promote golf throughout the country, completing 210 holes of golf shooting a one-over-par (840 strokes) and raising $2,800.

Stricken by polio at the age of two, La Goy, despite a withered right leg and a pronounced limp, believes he can attain the goal of 100 holes in a day. He also hopes this marathon will increase awareness for Sutter VNA & Hospice, a foundation that continues to help numerous patients in need. "Adversity comes in many forms and while life may sometimes deal you a less-than-perfect hand, it’s still about what you do with that hand that counts." La Goy also added, "I urge anyone that plays this great game to consider giving back to others through our sport, as golf has always been a conduit of support to charities within our community."
