Ponte Vedra Beach, FL — The Champions Tour’s leading money winner, Jay Haas, will make his second consecutive start in the New York metropolitan area this week at the Commerce Bank Championship on Long Island. Haas has his sights on a fourth consecutive victory and Champions Tour history.
With a victory, the St. Louis, MO native will tie Chi Chi Rodriguez’s Champions Tour record for consecutive victories with four. Rodriguez set the current record during the 1987 season. The 2005 Champions Tour Rookie of the Year has notched victories in his last three starts, the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, the FedEx Kinko’s Classic and the Senior PGA Championship.
Haas currently leads both the Charles Schwab Cup points race and the Champions Tour official money list. He has five top-10 finishes in eight events this season.
While the rest of the Champions Tour had last week off, Haas was already in the New York area competing in his 27th U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club. Haas finished T37 with rounds of 75-72-74-74 and extended his PGA TOUR record for cuts made to 591.
Haas was joined at Winged Foot by fellow Champions Tour players Allen Doyle, Fred Funk and Peter Jacobsen. Funk, who turned 50 on Wednesday, finished T40 with rounds of 71-75-73-77 and will make his Champions Tour debut in two weeks at the U.S. Senior Open. Doyle missed the 9-over-par 36-hole cut by one shot, firing rounds of 76-74. Jacobsen posted a pair of 76’s, missing the cut by three shots.
