LAKE MARY, FL – The second hole at Timacuan Golf & Country Club always captures the attention of golfers playing the semi-private club just north of Orlando. Very early in the round players are tested by one of the most difficult holes in Central Florida.
Now, the No. 2 is garnering even more attention. Golfweek’s Golf Life Magazine recently named Timacuan’s second hole among "The Best 18 Holes In Orlando." The list appears in the summer issue of the Golf Life Orlando magazine.
Water is the main characteristic on Timacuan’s No. 2, which plays 421 yards from the back tees. Players must drive over one lake to what is in essence an island fairway. Once safely in the fairway, players must then carry a second body of water to reach a putting surface that slopes from back to front. The shot can be anywhere 215 and 115 yards, depending upon how bold the player is off the tee. There is a bailout area to the right, but course architect Ron Garl suggests in the magazine that players should take an extra club and aim for the green, as there is plenty of room to miss it long.
"Our golf course has many unique holes, but for sure No. 2 draws the most comments," said Tony Johnson, General Manager at Timacuan. "It has it all – beauty, challenge and options. And there is no letup in the hole until the ball hits the bottom of the cup."
The Timacuan community and club are located off Rinehart Road near State Road 46-A in Lake Mary. Timacuan is ranked among the top courses in all of Florida. Designed in 1988 by Garl and refurbished by Bobby Weed in 1995, Timacuan is a par 71 that features two distinctly different nines.
Prior to starting work on the layout, Garl spent time in Scotland studying Links-style architecture, and that research is very evident on Timacuan’s front nine. Sprawling bunkers, generous landing areas, oversized, undulating greens, and framing mounds combine to create a challenging and memorable nine holes.
The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with beautiful oak trees and tall pines providing the framing. One large body of water comes into play on 15, 16 and 17, demanding accuracy.
Nearly every green complex has closely-mown fringe areas, allowing for a variety of shot selections when players miss the green. And speaking of the greens, they are consistently among the best conditioned putting surfaces in Central Florida.
