Pellucid Corp. reports the industry continued to show rounds performance strength as the Weather-Adjusted Rounds Performance Index increased to 138 for April year-to-date (YTD). This was driven by an increase of 10% in their proprietary measure of Golf Playable Hours (GPH) compared to Golf Datatech’s report of a 7% increase in rounds played for the first 4 months of the year.
In more good news, the May weather results show that GPH for the YTD period gained slightly to +11% compared to the April YTD results (the Rounds Performance Index is unavailable for May until Golf Datatech releases the rounds played numbers). Through their proprietary ability to track and quantify weather impact, Pellucid is uniquely positioned to determine that the industry is in fact rebounding on rounds played rather than solely benefiting from improved weather.
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on the significance of this positive trailing indicator of industry health, "We’ve often said that we’ll never fill the role of industry cheerleader, preferring to patiently wait for solid evidence of improving industry health vs. the current standard of proof which is anecdotal evidence. Our tracking in 2005 showed that, although the industry turned in flat rounds performance for the year, we were still lagging favorable weather which meant we weren’t driving rounds, we were merely inheriting the benefit of better weather. The April YTD numbers suggest that we’re now driving rounds at a national level."
Other encouraging results within the May report were the regional breadth favorability widening to a 4.0:1 ratio. This means of the 24 Pellucid-defined weather regions in the country, 16 are showing increases in GPH (>+2%), compared to only 4 showing GPH declines (>-2%) vs. May YTD 2005. Rounding out the picture are 4 regions with neutral GPH results (+/-2%) vs. the previous year.
More detail on the results from national level down to individual facility can be obtained through combinations of Pellucid’s Weather Impact Analyses: The Regional Weather Impact Tracking report, the Facility 10-year Weather Impact Trend report, the Facility Annual Weather Impact Analysis and the Facility Monthly Weather Impact Tracking report at prices beginning under $100 per facility.
Koppenhaver concludes, "It’s nice for a change to be the bearer of good news although we’re trailing many of the industry associations and CEOs of major management companies who announced rounds stabilization as far back as 2003. We’ll continue to stick to the facts and look for solid evidence of reversing fortunes, even if it means we’re the last ones to the party in announcing it. The solid first-half performance on weather-adjusted rounds, coupled with the continued normalization of supply growth, lays the foundation for improving industry performance at the national level."
