The Safeway Classic, Portland’s LPGA tour stop since 1972 is seeking volunteers help for this year’s event, Aug. 14-20 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. There are a variety of jobs available and those who are interested can apply online at www.safewaygolf.com or by calling volunteer coordinator Karl Aaker at 503-626-2711.
"Volunteers are the foundation of what makes this event so successful," said Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation Inc., the organizers of the event. "They help us to raise needed funds for local children’s charities in Oregon, while they have an exciting and rewarding experience.
"We are very fortunate to have one of the best and most loyal group of volunteers in golf, but with the growth of the LPGA and the Safeway Classic in particular, we are looking for some additional help," Maletis added.
Volunteers receive two admission tickets for the week, a parking pass, lunch each day they work and a volunteer party on Saturday night of the tournament. Volunteers need to purchase a uniform shirt ($20) and have the option to purchase a pullover as well ($30), as part of the package.
Last year the Safeway Classic donated over $850,000 to local charities through the Safeway Foundation. To date the event has given over $10 million to local organizations in need, with $6 million coming in the pas nine years with Safeway as title sponsor.
Tournament Golf Foundation Inc. is a local Portland area group of volunteers who donate their time and provide the primary operations for the annual event. Begun in 1972, the group is now comprised of 47 local individuals and couples. TGFI is also the owner and operator of the Safeway International, in Phoenix, AZ.
