CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 12) – John Walters broke the all-time scoring mark on the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour by firing an eight-under 64. Walters’ record came during a tourney at Stonebridge Golf Club held by the Charlotte division of the Harris Teeter Senior Tour.
The previous record was 66, set twice in 2002 by Mike Emory and former U.S. Senior Amateur champ Cliff Cunningham.
The 59-year-old Walters, who recently relocated to Charlotte, enjoyed a bogey-free round. He birdied holes No. 1, 5, 7, 14, 15 and 18, and chipped in for eagle on the short par-4 10th hole.
Walters had all aspects of his game in sync. He missed just one green and two fairways all day on the par-72 layout, which played at 6,437 yards. His only scare came on the par-3 17th when his missed the green, chipped from the rough to about 10 feet, then rolled in a putt.
"It was one of the easiest rounds I’ve ever shot. Other than the par-saving putt at No. 17, everything else was either a short putt for birdie or a tap in," Walters said. "I don’t know how to explain it. Usually some part of your game is off, whether it’s your driver, irons or putting. But for some reason right now, I have everything together at one time. I’ve been playing pretty well."
It was his second-straight victory on the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour, and fourth win in the last seven events. He currently leads the point standings in the championship flight of the Charlotte tour.
"I think the Harris Teeter Senior Tour is great," he said. "We play good, quality courses at a reasonable price. I told somebody that even if they didn’t give prizes, I would play just to get to play the courses."
