HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Amateur Golf Tour held its first ever mid-season Carolinas Championship this past weekend, with Lorcan Morris of the tour’s Charlotte division emerging as the winner.
Morris opened with a 75, then fired a final-round 68 to coast to victory in the championship flight. His 143 total was good for a six-shot win over David Helms (77-72), who also competes on the AGT’s Charlotte tour. The Carolinas Championship took place July 15-16 at Palmetto Dunes on the Arthur Hills and Tom Fazio courses.
In the A flight, Tim Phelps was the winner, shooting 77-73–150. Phelps, from the AGT’s Down East (NC) division, edged Columbia’s Richard Wood (74-77) by a stroke. Competition was also tight in the B flight, where Jim Manning (79-83–162) of the Hilton Head tour recorded a one-stroke victory over Dan Bubany (86-77–163) of the Upstate.
The C flight champ was Doug Cox from the tour’s Tampa division. Cox shot 84-87–171 and won a three-hole sudden death playoff. Asheville’s John Holland (87-88–175) took top honors in the D flight.
The tournament drew a field of 135 golfers. For more information about the Amateur Golf Tour, visit www.amateurgolftour.net.
