James Smith, the England under 21 player, had to settle for second place in the RiverWoods Junior Open at the Toxandria club in the Netherlands.

But in a good week for English players, his team-mates Ben Evans and Daniel Willett all finished in the top five of this international event ensuring the England team took the Nations Cup title.

Smith , 20 (pictured left – photo courtesy of Tom Ward), from Kent, shared top spot with the Dutch duo of Tim Sluiter and Reinier Saxton on 203 going into the final round. But while Smith carded a commendable 70, Sluiter went round in 68 to claim victory on 271.

Evans, 19, from Sussex, shot 71 to share third place on 276 with Saxton, while Willett carded the low round of the day, a 67, to climb into fifth spot on 278.

Leading final scores:

271 T Sluiter (Ned) 70 69 64 68

273 J Smith (Eng) 68 67 68 70

276 B Evans (Eng) 67 68 70 71
