Srixon’s Jim Furyk Comes in 4th Place at the 2006 British Open Championship
ATLANTA — July 24, 2006 Srixon Staff Professional John Rollins won the B.C. Open after rolling in a 7-foot putt for birdie on the final hole of play on Sunday, July 23, 2006 in Verona, NY. Rollins played with a Srixon Z-UR golf ball, Srixon forged irons and Srixon wedges to fire a 19-under par, 269 total (67-70-68-64) which included a bogey-free 64 on the final day of play and an eagle from the fairway on the par-4 4th hole in the third round. Rollins exhibited clutch putting down the stretch with a 10 foot par save on the 17th hole to set up his final hole heroics. Standing on the 598-yard par 5 18th hole tied for the lead, Rollins hit a perfect drive and followed it up with a 3-wood to the back fringe of the green with a difficult sloping downhill putt. After his first putt left him a tricky left-to-right 6-footer, Rollins confidently knocked in the birdie for the win and $540,000 first prize.
"I knew that the winner was going to have to go pretty low all four days to win because the conditions were ideal for scoring," said Rollins. "I had a lot of confidence because the Z-UR is such a long golf ball yet gives great control into and around the greens – the keys to scoring. So when I needed birdie on the final hole, I knew I could carry the left hand bunker which was 285 yards off the tee and have a clear shot at the green in two. Sure enough, 600 yards and two putts later, I had the win."
With this second career win on the PGA TOUR, Rollins now has over $1.3 million in earnings for the season, 4 Top 10s, and has moved into the Top 10 in Ryder Cup standings.
At the 2006 British Open Championship, Srixon Staff Professional Jim Furyk came in 4th place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England on Sunday. Furyk relied on Srixon’s Z-UR prototype golf ball, Srixon’s W-506 driver, I-506 irons and Srixon wedges to shoot 12-under par, 276 total (68-71-66-71). Furyk’s putting was superb as he sank many putts from 15, 25 and even 40 feet to keep him atop the leaderboard and in contention. Furyk, currently ranked 5th in the world, has had a remarkable season since switching to Srixon this year. He has accumulated 8 Top 10 finishes this year including a win at the Wachovia Championship and a tie for 2nd place finish at the U.S. Open Championship. Furyk now ranks number 2 on the 2006 PGA TOUR money list with over $4.1 million for the season and has now amassed over $28 million in career earnings and currently ranks 5th all time. He maintains his 2nd place ranking in scoring average (69.16) and is 5th in driving accuracy percentage (73.8%).
With his performance at the British Open, Srixon Staff Professional Robert Allenby moved into first place in the PGA TOUR’s all around ranking.
Srixon now has 2 wins among 26 Top 10s on the PGA TOUR this season, including two second place finishes in the first two majors this year: Tim Clark at The Masters and Jim Furyk at The U.S. Open.
