UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Guests at Ahmad Rashad’s Second Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit Cystic Fibrosis went home with a little something extra this year: The little black book of golf stories known as Golfoholics, The Front Nine.
Reclusive Golfoholicsâ?¢ author Chase Balata made a rare appearance and signed books before duck hooking his tee shot into the crowd. The Classic was held July 21-23 at the Fox Hopyard Golf Club near Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Joining Rashad were Bill Murray, Charles Barkley, Lawrence Taylor, Marcus Allen, Tom Dreesen, Rich "Goose" Gossage, John Havlicek, Mike Eruzione and dozens of others from the Celebrity Players Tour (CPT).
"The tournament was like a meeting of Golfoholics Unanimous," said Balata. "Nearly everyone I met was a self-confessed golf junkie."
Balata’s book Golfoholics, The Front Nine chronicles the misadventures of a couple of hopelessly addicted hackers in nine short stories. Neither rain, sleet, snow nor the dead of night can keep Skully and Banes from their appointed rounds – whether on the course or at the 19th hole where their next match is being teed up.
The brand also extends to a line of gear featuring Golfoholics trademark olive pierced by a golf tee. In fact, Rashad was wearing a Golfoholics shirt on Sunday when he and partner Vince Coleman won the tournament. Rashad and Coleman had a best-ball score of 4-under-par 68, which gave them a 36-hole total of 11-under 133. They shot a 7-under 65 Saturday in the opening round scramble event.
Rashad’s Classic was one of a number of events on the Celebrity Players Tour (CPT). The CPT, organized in 1997, brings together the greatest athletes in the history of MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and some of the greatest entertainers in the world today. Boasting more than 130 members, the Tour has raised more than $3 million each year for charitable causes, many of which focus on children’s needs.
