GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Defending champion K.J. Choi will return to defend last year’s two-stroke Chrysler Classic of Greensboro victory over 2003 winner Shigeki Murayama. Some of the biggest names on the PGA TOUR have already made plans to join Choi in the 67th annual Chrysler Classic field. Many of those making early commitments are alumni of Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
Among the players who have already committed to the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event are University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumnus Davis Love III and fan favorite John Daly. Love’s course design company managed the 2003 redesign of Forest Oaks Country Club.
Two N.C. State alumni, South African Tim Clark and (Greensboro)Grimsley High School alumnus Carl Pettersson, will return to Forest Oaks Country Club in October. Clarke was the runner up at The Masters this year, is ranked 18th in the current Official World Golf Rankings, is 21st on the PGA TOUR Official Money List and finished tied for sixth in last year’s Chrysler Classic.
Pettersson won The Memorial Tournament earlier this season; he is 23rd in the Official World Golf Rankings and 12th on the PGA TOUR Official Money List. The Gothenburg, Sweden native finished tied for 11th in last year’s Chrysler Classic. After making his PGA TOUR debut in the 2002 Chrysler Classic while still a student at Wake Forest University, Bill Haas will make his first run for the Sam Snead Cup as a professional this year.
Clemson University alumnus Lucas Glover finished tied for 21st in 2005 and will return to the Chrysler Classic this year. Glover is 23rd on the current PGA TOUR Official Money List. Bubba Watson, a long-hitting University of Georgia alumnus will make his first appearance in the Chrysler Classic this fall. Watson leads the current PGA TOUR Driving Distance category averaging 318.8 yards per drive.
The 2006 Chrysler Classic is set for Oct. 2-8 at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament thanks Daimler-Chrysler for 11 great years of partnership. Additional tournament information is available at www.chryslerclassic.org or through the tournament office at (336) 379-1570.
