Parade of Sod Trucks Rolls into ConCan
(ConCan, Texas) "Grassing" (the process of adding turfgrass to soil that has been prepared and shaped for golf course construction) is well underway at the first golf course of its kind in the Texas Hill Country River Region along the Frio River.
ConCan Country Club at Mountain Valley, designed by architects Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell of Bechtol Russell Golf, has sodded fairways and tees on seven holes, plus the driving range, and the sod trucks continue to roll in.
Bechtol beamed about the project after a full-day site visit last week. "This has been as much fun as any project we’ve ever done," said Bechtol. "To see the owners take such pride and bring such enthusiasm to the project is so much fun for us. And we’re so lucky to have Bobby Steele and SEMA Golf as the construction company. We’ve formed a heck of a team on this one."
Russell agreed. "This is how you want things to be done. The owners really love this place, and their pride is going to show in the way they care for their golf course and their customers. This has been a really special project for us, and we’re fortunate to be a part of it."
Owners Kenneth and Barbara Arthur, longtime residents of ConCan and owners of Frio Country Resorts and the area favorite House Pasture Restaurant, are unusually devoted to their new project. Local resident and avid golfer Tom Bartlett explained, "Getting Bechtol Russell to design that course and getting a big time company like SEMA Golf to build it is unbelievable. We all just thought this would be a little small-town goat track, but that ain’t the case here. We can’t wait to play it."
The 7300-yard, par-72 course is completely surrounded by the mountains of the Frio Canyon and is due to open in the fall of 2006, with an official grand opening scheduled for spring 2007. Homesites, memberships and more detailed information are available by calling the ConCan Country Club golf shop at (830) 232-4471 or by virtual visit to www.concangolf.com.
