There was a battle between the current # 1 and # 2 players on the PGA Tour at the Buick Open this weekend, and while the # 1 player in the world showed he was still the most dominant player to ever play the game, the player who finished second has a lot to be smiling about this season.
The player has earned 8 Top Three finishes in 2006, including four in a row and Top Three finishes at the US Open and the British Open. It is by all means a career year for the 16-year pro, earning $4,692,916 in 18 events. He has placed in the Top 10 in half of these events and sits as the 5th leading career money leader in the history of the PGA Tour.
His success with a Nickent hybrid this year makes Nickent the highest-ranking hybrid on the PGA Tour money list, a fact that makes Nickent gush with pride.
"Here you have one of the most meticulous golfers of our generation choosing a Nickent 3DX hybrid and having his best year while it has been in the bag," said Nickent CEO Michael Lee. "We are very happy for him and very proud at the same time."
The Nickent hybrid has been in the bag for all 8 of his Top Three finishes, making the 3DX one of the most high profile hybrids on the PGA Tour this year. That success, however, is not changing the young companies overall philosophy.
Nickent started their hybrid push on the Nationwide Tour, a tour that Nickent considers their home. They are the # 1 most played hybrid overall on the 2006 Nationwide Tour and also # 1 in hybrid Top 10’s on the Nationwide Tour, with 45 Top 10’s in only 19 events so far this year. They have also been in the winning bag six times this year on the PGA Tours, making them the winningest hybrid on the 2006 PGA Tour and Nationwide Tours combined.
Nickent was one of the first golf club manufacturers to introduce the hybrid as we know it to market. Their success on tour led Nickent to make their company tag line "King of Hybrids." This name has been solidified by players like the current # 2 PGA Tour player and hundreds of other PGA Tour players putting their clubs in their bag, despite not having an endorsement contract to do so.
"It’s very special and unique what we have been able to accomplish on the tours this year," said Lee. "When you have so many players choosing your club, even while all of the larger companies are coming after you, it gives you a real sense of accomplishment. We feel like the Nationwide Tour was the catalyst to this mass acceptance."
When asked what one of the biggest differences between Nickent and the competition was and why Nickent was still considered the underdog despite having been able to claim # 1 hybrid position on the Nationwide Tour for three years in a row, Lee responded by saying:
"There has been a hybrid war that is taking place on the Nationwide Tour because of the huge hybrid boom. I think the biggest difference is that some of the others are relying on prototype golf clubs that the end consumer will never see. There is one company who has been attempting a hybrid push this year, and they brought out something like five golf clubs made for the tour that the consumer can’t purchase. We like the fact that our golf clubs in the bags of the professionals are the same clubs that we sell at retail. We think it shows that we know what really works and that we are the true representation of what a golf club company should be."
