The Safeway Classic will take place next week in Portland, OR and the final field for the event is set. The 35th edition of the tournament will feature a field with some familiar faces and some new ones for Portland area fans.

Familiar faces include Karrie Webb, second on the LPGA money list this year, Juli Inkster, winner of the Safeway International in March and Sherri Steinhauer, who won the Women’s British Open last week at Royal Lytham. Other returning stars include Paula Creamer, Pat Hurst, Christina Kim and Natalie Gulbis.

Additionally, former Portland champions Mi Hyun Kim, Hee-Won Han and last year’s champion Soo-Yun Kang will return to Portland.

New faces this year that will highlight the field include Morgan Pressel, last year’s US Women’s Amateur Champion, Brittany Lang and Japanese rookie sensation Ai Miyazato.

Portland’s Allison Hanna will return home to play in the event as well. Hanna who is currently 70th on the money list played the past two years in the event under a sponsor’s exemption, making the cut both years. This year Hanna earned full exemption on tour through qualifying school.

The sponsor’s exemptions this year will feature one professional and one amateur. 18-year old Sydnee Michaels, who will play next at UCLA, won the Safeway Classic Amateur Open last week to earn a spot in the tournament. The second spot will be filled by Ashley Prange. Prange won the spot on the Golf Channel reality show Big Break V. She defeated 12 other golfers in a series of skill and stroke play events to earn this spot. Prange currently plays on the Duramed Futures Tour and has two wins to date this year and is 4th on the money list.

The 54-hole tournament will be played from Friday Aug. 18-Sunday Aug. 20. Pro-Am events and practice rounds will be held from Monday through Thursday next week.

The best value for fans interested in attending the event is to spend $25 at any local Safeway store. With the purchase they will get a coupon good for two any day admissions to the tournament.
