Edges Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman in Playoff
CARLSBAD, Calif. (August 14, 2006) – TaylorMade-adidas PGA Tour Staff professional Dean Wilson broke through with a playoff victory on the PGA Tour over fellow TaylorMade-adidas staffer, Tom Lehman at The International, held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. Wilson secured the victory with a 6-foot birdie on the second playoff hole after Lehman just missed his own birdie attempt. The 36-year old Hawaiian got the victory in his 118th PGA Tour event after securing his PGA Tour card four years ago. Wilson has six victories on the Japan Tour.
The Stableford format which rewards birdies more than it penalizes for bogeys, fit right into Wilson’s aggressive play. Wilson threw in seven birdies against only two bogies to score 12 points in the final round which was the second highest total of the day. Wilson led the field for the week with 22 birdies. But key to Wilson’s victory was his par-5 play where he was able to take advantage of long drives that found the short grass. The par-5s are ripe for scoring in the Stableford format, offering 2 points for a birdie and 5 points for an eagle. Wilson led the field in par-5 scoring going 14-under par for the week.
In Wilson’s Bag: TaylorMade® r7® Quad Driver, TaylorMade® 200 Series 3-wood, TaylorMade® Rescue® dual, and TaylorMade® rac LT irons.
As the ninth first-time winner on tour this season, Wilson will receive an invitation to his native state in January 2007, site of the season-opening, winners-only Mercedes Championship.
"We knew it was only a matter of time before we saw Dean in the winner’s circle," says Chuck Presto, senior vice president of sports marketing for TaylorMade-adidas Golf. "Dean is too good a player not to win. He’s paid his dues out there and we congratulate him on the first of what will be many wins."
