In the month to 15 August 2006 the Golfalot Price Index, which tracks the average price of golf equipment from UK retailers, increased slightly with a 0.3% gain. With this small overall gain, the Golfalot Price Index shows that there are still golfers out there buying golf equipment and we wait with interest to see the effect of the Ryder Cup in the coming months on future prices.
Golf balls were the big riser with a gain of 6%, as the new TaylorMade TP golf balls arrived on the market. With their high initial price they accounted for 4% of the rise, with general increases across the board adding the other 2%. As more retailers start to stock the new balls, we expect to see the TaylorMade TP price come down. Golf balls, along with golf shoes, are the only two categories to have experienced a rise in prices since the Golfalot Price Index launched in 2004.
The other categories to gain in the last month were drivers and fairway woods, as the new Cobra HS product started to appear on the shelves. Excluding these items, fairway woods only gained 0.5% and drivers actually fell by 1.2% The main fallers this month were wedges, shoes and bags, which all declined by around 1.5% as the tough retail climate continued.
