Timacuan Golf & Country Club To Host Men's Pro-Am Scramble Event August 26

August 22, 2006

LAKE MARY, FL – The first Timacuan Men’s Pro-Am Scramble is set for Saturday August 26, with 11 area golf professionals each teaming with four amateurs in the 18-hole event.
The new compeititon is scheduled for Timacuan Golf & Country Club, one of Florida’s top-ranked courses located in Lake Mary, just north of Orlando.
Each team will consist of an A,B,C, and D player from the amateur ranks, and one professional. There will be three winning teams – Low Gross Front Nine, Low gross Back Nine, Low Gross 18-Hole Total, with a sum of $1,500 in prize money money offered. There will also be a Skins Game within the Scramble tournament.
Teams will be drawn once 40 amateurs have registered, at $75 per player (including cart fee, beverage cart and lunch). The golf professionals are:
Tony Johnson, Tony Miller, Bob Reed and Ricardo Stevens from Timcuan, David Moore of Heathrow Country Club, Matt Payne of Victoria Hills Golf Club, Jimmy McMullen of Red Tail Golf Club, Mike Regner of Rio Pinar Country Club, and San Diego Golf Academy’s Brad Turner and Ray Herzog.
The Timacuan community and club are located off Rinehart Road near State Road 46-A in Lake Mary. Timacuan is ranked among the top courses in all of Florida. Designed in 1988 by Ron Garl and refurbished by Bobby Weed in 1995, Timacuan is a par 71 that features two distinctly different nines.
Prior to starting work on the layout, Garl spent time in Scotland studying Links-style architecture, and that research is very evident on Timacuan’s front nine. Sprawling bunkers, generous landing areas, oversized, undulating greens, and framing mounds combine to create a challenging and memorable nine holes.
The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with beautiful oak trees and tall pines providing the framing. One large body of water comes into play on 15, 16 and 17, demanding accuracy.
Nearly every green complex has closely-mown fringe areas, allowing for a variety of shot selections when players miss the green. And speaking of the greens, they are consistently among the best conditioned putting surfaces in Central Florida.
"Timacuan is a semi-private golf club with a private-club feel," Johnson. "Our visiting guests receive the same first-class treatment as our members. That’s one of the reasons we see the same players return year after year during the season. They seem to love the service, and the uniqueness of the layout at Timacuan."
