ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – In October 2005 The First Tee of Ireland became the fifth international Chapter of The First Tee, joining Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Singapore. Recognised as a premier junior golf and youth character education program, The First Tee has opened over 250 golf-learning facilities in 47 states in addition to the international locations.
In an exciting development, Cllr. Vincent Jackson, The Lord Mayor of Dublin, John Warren, Executive Director of The First Tee of Ireland, and Gerry Barry, Manager of Parks & Recreation for Dublin City Council, jointly announced The First Tee of Ireland’s partnership with Dublin City Council naming Silloge Golf Course as the latest Affiliate Venue of The First Tee of Ireland.
"We welcome the affiliate relationship between The First Tee of Ireland and Dublin City Council," said Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., Executive Director of The First Tee. "Their willingness to allow The First Tee participants access to their course is important to the development of the young participants of The First Tee of Ireland and in particular to the youth of Ballymun and its wider community."
Silloge is a public golf course managed by Dublin City Council Parks Department. The Christopher O’Connor Golf Club is located at Silloge and is run by Irish golfing legend Christy O’Connor Sr’s two sons, Peter and Christopher. A challenging 5900 metres, par 71, 18 hole parkland course which is situated 6 miles north of the centre of Dublin City, beside the M50 Motorway at the Ballymun junction and adjacent to Dublin Airport. Silloge has a proud tradition of providing junior golf instruction for youth in the area.
"We look forward to working with the young people of the area and to providing opportunities for self development both on and off the golf course," said Warren. "Through the support of our Premier Partners, One51 and Ulster Bank, we will teach our participants life-enhancing values and character education through The First Tee Life Skills Experienceâ?¢." This partnership with Dublin City Council is a very important part of our development and growth plans for the future.
The First Tee Life Skills Experience is the unique feature that separates The First Tee from many other youth initiatives and junior golf programs. Through this experience, participants learn valuable lessons such as: the importance of maintaining a positive attitude; how to make decisions by thinking about the possible consequences; how to define and set goals; and how to transfer the positive values of golf to everyday life.
