HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Amateur Golf Tour, America’s largest tour for amateur golfers, has selected Palmetto Dunes Resort as the host site for its 2006 National Championship.

The championship will bring an estimated field of 500 golfers to Hilton Head from the tour’s 28 divisions across the country. The event was held in Myrtle Beach the past four years.

Palmetto Dunes is providing five courses for the 36-hole stroke play event, which takes place Oct. 28-29.

"This is a big step up for the Amateur Golf Tour as these five courses give us our best championship venues ever," said tour president Dennis McCormac. "Palmetto Dunes also provides a resort atmosphere with added amenities for our players and their families."

McCormac worked with the staff at Palmetto Dunes and the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce to secure the location. It will be one of the largest golf tournaments ever held on the island.

"The whole area, with the help of the chamber, has really gotten behind this," said McCormac. "They’ve been very receptive to our needs and I expect this to be the best national championship in tour history."

The Amateur Golf Tour, founded in Charlotte in 1995, has conducted a national championship since 1998.

The 2006 AGT National Championship is an invitation-only event. To qualify, golfers must finish among the top 10 in points in their flight at the local level. Flights are: Championship (0-5 handicap), A Flight (6-10), B Flight (11-15), C Flight (16-20) and D Flight (21-25).

AGT golfers will vie for a total purse of $12,500 in gift certificates. In addition to tourney rounds on Saturday and Sunday, participants will have the opportunity to arrive early and play practice rounds from Oct. 25-29.
