Gimme A RulingÌ¢?å¢ provides fun way for golfers to learn the rules
ATLANTA, Ga. – Just about everyone who was watching the Bridgestone Championship on the afternoon of Aug. 25 was shaking their heads. Tiger Woods hit his second shot on the ninth hole of the Firestone CC South Course wide to the right. The ball hit a cart path and bounded up and over the clubhouse. Then a person walking by, never thinking the ball was in play, picked up the ball and continued on his journey.
It took over a half hour, but PGA Tour rules official Dillard Pruitt got it right. Citing Rule 24-2(i), Pruitt ascertained a place where Woods could drop the ball without penalty. It didn’t leave him an easy shot, but it allowed him to save bogey and go on to win the tournament.
Of course, you would have known this if you had Gimme A Rulingâ?¢, a new, exciting, educational game that teaches the Rules of Golf and is licensed by the USGA. The set of more than 550 flash cards helps golfers from novice to professional learn the rules of the golf in an entertaining fashion.
On the front of each card is a situation/question as stated in "Decisions on the Rules of Golf." On the back of the card is the correct ruling according to the "Decisions on the Rules of Golf." The cards are divided into 10 sections by category cards. Players answer questions and roll die to determine his/her score hole by hole. Just as in a round of golf, the player with the lowest total number of strokes wins.
Why did Tiger get relief? It wasn’t because of the clubhouse; it was because of the grandstands that horseshoe around the green. Pruitt ruled that the stands constituted a temporary immovable obstruction. He then found a security person who witnessed the patron picking up and walking off with the ball and they identified where the ball was when it landed.
Pruitt proceeded to measure the distance between the ball and the hole. He then found the closest point where Woods would have relief from the stands and not be nearer the hole. Then, Tiger was able to take his drop with no penalty and then finish the hole.
So, for you who thought he was getting preferential treatment because he is, after all, Tiger Woods, think again. Better yet, go to either category 8 or 9 in the Gimme A Ruling game cards and learn when you can and cannot receive a free drop. It just may help you out of a tight situation in your next round.
