September 1, 2006

MARIETTA, GA – Sixty-seven golf course employees or their dependents and 9 future superintendents were awarded college scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year from the Georgia State Golf Foundation (GSGF), the charitable affiliate of the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA). The recipients were honored at a luncheon June 9 at the Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta.

The Yates Scholarship Program, which provides college funds to GSGA member club employees and their dependents, granted more than $103,000 to 25 new scholars and 42 renewing scholars for the 2006-2007 school year. The scholarships are awarded annually based on academic achievement, financial need, work experience at a GSGA member club and character. They are renewable upon demonstration of continued academic achievement. Now in its 19th year, the Yates program has supported more than 180 scholars with some $780,000 in grants. The program is named for Charles, Dan and Danny Yates of Atlanta, all of whom have contributed greatly to the game of golf. All GSGA Member Club employees and their dependents are eligible to apply. Applications for the 2007-2008 school year can be found at www.gsga.org, and are being accepted through March 2, 2007.

Georgia’s most promising future superintendents are also supported by the GSGF, through the Monty Moncrief Memorial Scholarship Program. The Moncrief Scholarships honor deserving students in the field of agronomy and turf management at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) and the University of Georgia (UGA). Six students from ABAC and three from UGA received scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year. This program is also supported by the Georgia Golf Environmental Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association. The program is in its 30th year and has granted more than $245,000 to more than 200 Moncrief Scholars. The scholarship is named in memory of Moncrief, a former Southeastern Green Section Director for the United States Golf Association. Scholars are nominated by their faculty advisors and selected based on academic achievement, character and financial need.
