Senior Division winner Lynn Martin of Powell, Ohio (pictured right) played the two day Ohio Champions Tournament in 71-72 to capture the title in the inaugural event playing the Volvik PROsPECT 3 piece z-urethane cover golf ball.
When contacted Martin still did not know which ball he had played to the win. All 80 participants in the two day event played the same ball. However the Ohio Golf Association did not reveal the manufacturer or the model of ball until Thursday. All balls supplied to the field bore only the OAG label and an aim line that said Champions08222306. Each player received sample balls two weeks prior to play in order to test, and adjust if necessary, their game prior to the event.
Martin told Glen Coombe of FLGolf, Inc./Volvik Golf Balls, "I tested the ball at Red Hawk where a lot of senior events are played. I generally play there and hit from the plates on the tee, rather than the markers, so that I know just how I’m doing. I didn’t have to make any adjustments to my game at all to play the ball. It performed the exactly the same as my regular ball, the Callaway HX Tour. When I was testing it I took it out on the green and stroked one ball then the other with my eyes closed. The OGA ball felt a bit softer off the putter, but that didn’t mean it when shorter or rolled different."
Martin who plays to a USGA index of .6 is 62 years young. He said, "I’ve been playing pretty good the past month or so and was quite pleased with the strength of the field, it was a good field." Martin who qualified for the Champions event won the OGA Senior Classic in 2004.
The 36 hole Ohio Champions Tournament was held at the 6,822 yard Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield, Ohio where conditions where said to be very good with the greens playing a bit firm.
Coombe said, "The PROsPECT golf ball seems to have been the equalizer in this event rather than a shorter ball. The average swing speed of Lynn Martin, while very good for a sixty-two year old, produced very consistent results. Lynn hits his seven iron one hundred and fifty yards and has a reported driver swing speed in the 96-100 mph range. It’s very interesting to see the results this fine player has with a golf ball priced below thirty dollars vs. one that regularly is priced above forty dollars."
FLGolf, Inc. President Chuck Womer said, "Congratulations Lynn! Thanks for your participation in the event and thanks for your comments regarding our ball. I think the Ohio Golf Association should be commended for their fine effort and a great tournament."
