PEARL RIVER, NY – Gordon Simmonds, an entrepreneur and well-known authority on amateur golf, has accepted a leadership role with Classics of Golf as Global Sales & Marketing Director, it was announced by Michael P. Beckerich, publisher and owner of the company.
"Golf is fortunate to have a man of Gordon’s experience, education, passion and charm, and Classics of Golf is fortunate to have him, too," Beckerich said. "His body of published material is extremely impressive and compatible with our goals and objectives. We expect to enjoy an enormous synergy working with him."
Simmonds, 45, is author of the definitive history, "The Walker Cup: Golf’s Finest Contest," and, among other ventures, was executive producer of the 13-episode TV series ALL A-Round Golf, broadcast in over 20 countries. Simmonds’ opinions and knowledge of the golf industry are highly sought after by an array of clients throughout the UK and Asia.
"Gordon’s real passion is keeping a finger on the pulse of the worldwide amateur golf scene and presenting his significant expertise in a quarterly newsletter to 3,000 eager enthusiasts around the world," Beckerich added.
Simmonds, who resides in both Scotland and the Philippines, earned his law degree from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1982, and practiced corporate finance law until becoming an entrepreneur and full-time golf scholar in 1995.
Additional Information and Company Background
At Classics of Golf, he joins Publisher Beckerich and Executive Director Eric Levin. Classics of Golf, founded in 1983 by Herbert Warren Wind and Robert S. Macdonald, keeps in print the great works of golf literature. Since Beckerich acquired the company in 2001, he has expanded its scope, publishing new works under the Future Classics imprint (including the first biography of A.W. Tillinghast and the first comprehensive history of the U.S. Amateur Championship). Beckerich also launched an advanced ecommerce Website, www.classicsofgolf.com.
"With the addition of Gordon to our team, Classics of Golf is truly positioned for continued growth," Beckerich said. "Our immediate goals are to sell the complete Classics Library—now at 69 titles and growing—to individuals and golf clubs and to present the Tillinghast biography and Amateur trilogy to the high-end corporate market.
"These books were made for an elite audience," he added. "A great deal of care and expense went into producing them, and they are not available in trade bookstores. We offer them in limited edition leather bindings as well as in deluxe hardcover editions."
Looking to the future, Beckerich noted, "We have the talent and expertise in-house to take a leadership role in the club history market, which is an area Gordon and I agree has great potential for us. The allure of Classics of Golf, the mystique created by Herbert Warren Wind, means that talented writers will covet the opportunity to work with Gordon and participate in a Classics of Golf project."
