Paul Casey, winner of the 2006 HSBC World Match Play Championship, has confirmed he will go for a unique double at the HSBC Champions tournament in China, 9-12 November.
Casey will look to follow up his £1 million first prize at Wentworth by winning first prize at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. World Number One, Tiger Woods, and defending champion, David Howell, stand in his path as he aims to improve on his 7th place last year.
Following his resounding 10 & 8 defeat of Shaun Micheel, Paul said, "I delighted to win the HSBC World Match Play Championship – it is an event with an amazing history and a fantastic list of winners and it’s been the perfect way to prepare for the Ryder Cup. I am really looking forward to playing in the HSBC Champions again – it was a great event last year and it will be really special to be heading there aiming for the HSBC double."
Giles Morgan, Global Head of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, HSBC Holdings plc., said:
"Paul is an extremely worthy winner of the HSBC World Match Play. Anyone who comes through a field as strong as this one, which included six of the world’s top 10 ranked golfers, has to have played very well indeed.
"We’re delighted that he’s confirmed he will play in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions, which will give him the chance to complete a special ‘HSBC double’."
A host of the World’s best golfers are already lined up to play in the HSBC Champions event. Along with World Number 1, Tiger Woods, World Number 2, Jim Furyk and World Number 5, Retief Goosen, have confirmed they will be in Shanghai to compete for the coveted ‘Champion of Champions’ title. Last year’s inaugural winner, David Howell, who currently lies at Number 1 on the European Order of Merit, will also be back to defend his title along with European Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie.
Local players Zhang Lian-Wei, KJ Choi Liang Wen Chong and Li Chao will also play in the HSBC Champions, which offers a prize fund of US$5 million – the largest across Asia – with winners from four leading golf tours and the top 50 on the Official World Rankings qualifying. The event is co-sanctioned by The European Tour, Asian Tour, the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Sunshine (Southern Africa) Tour, and the China Golf Association.
