The American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) has released a brochure titled, "Selecting Your Golf Course Architect: Questions & Answers." This four-page piece provides owners, developers, managers and club leaders with details on the complex role a golf course architect plays in the planning, designing and building of a course.
Greg Muirhead, ASGCA President, describes the importance of choosing a qualified, experienced golf course architect: "Only through a thorough knowledge of the game can the architect develop a true understanding of strategy, shot value, limitations of players and equipment and realistic design possibilities," he notes. "An experienced golf course architect has a unique skill set that will smooth the process of both new golf course development and remodeling."
ASGCA-member golf course architects meet the criteria of being qualified and experienced. By completing the multi-year ASGCA membership process, golf course architects with the "ASGCA" designation after their names are, in effect, pre-qualified. On average, an ASGCA member has more than 20 years of golf course architecture experience and has dozens of both remodels and new course designs in his or her portfolio. In fact, even new members are very experienced; last year’s "class" of new members averaged 46 years old and had spent 25 years in the business.
