Byron Nelson Passes Away

September 27, 2006

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA…Sadly, legendary golfer and gentleman Byron Nelson has passed away at the age of 94.

A Cleveland Golf Staff Member since 1989, Mr. Nelson held records that will likely never be broken. In 1945, he won 11 consecutive tournaments, 18 in a single season and had a scoring average of 68.3. However, Mr. Nelson’s legacy was far greater than what he accomplished on the golf course.

"I prefer being remembered as being friendly and a good Christian than as being a good golfer," Mr. Nelson was quoted as saying. "I don’t think I know anybody who has as many friends as I do. It’s very gratifying." His tireless efforts raising money for charity and encouraging young tour players in both their games and in life will never be forgotten.

"Byron was golf’s great ambassador," said Greg Hopkins, President/CEO of Cleveland Golf. "And more than that, he was a man of wisdom, faith and success in life. We will miss him greatly."

Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.
