A tight race got even tighter this week as Jay Haas moved to within 20 points of Loren Roberts at the top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Haas tied for 10th at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn and earned 39 points. Roberts withdrew early in the week to attend the funeral of his friend Byron Nelson. Brad Bryant, Bobby Wadkins and Gil Morgan make up the remainder of the top five.
"I feel I’m definitely in the hunt but I need to play well the last four weeks though" said Haas. "Obviously, Loren is right there and he’s going to be tough to overtake, but I like the courses we’re going to. I haven’t played Raleigh, but I really like Houston and San Antonio. I love Oak Hills; I’ve had some good luck there. I had a good chance to win at Sonoma last year. I won’t say I’m in great shape, but I like my position and if I continue to play well, I can be there at the end."

The Charles Schwab Cup is a season-long points program designed to recognize the Tour’s leading player. The program rewards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all 28 official Charles Schwab Cup events. Points are awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties and are based on the money distribution for each tournament, with every $1,000 earned being the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point. Points are doubled at the Champions Tour’s five major championships and the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The winner of the 2006 Charles Schwab Cup will earn a $1 million annuity.
The second through fifth-place finishers earn annuities of $500,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000.
The previous winners in the competition are Allen Doyle (2001), Hale Irwin (2002 and 2004) and Tom Watson (2003 and 2005).
