Golf Inc. magazine crowns the Golden Bear for the third year in a row
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla.ÂåÂ-Jack Nicklaus, widely considered the greatest player in the history of golf and an industry-leading icon who continues to shape the game on and off the course, particularly with his critically acclaimed course design work, has been named by Golf Inc. magazine editors as the "Most Powerful Person in Golf" for the third year in a row.
Nicklaus was once again awarded the top spot because he continues to transcend his record-setting playing legacy, and impact the game through the world’s leading golf course design firm, Nicklaus Design; the development of golf course communities by Nicklaus Investments/Guggenheim Nicklaus Partners; the manufacturing of golf clubs and other equipment by Nicklaus Golf Equipment; the marketing and licensing of other golf products, such as the Jack Nicklaus Sportswear line of apparel; and the philanthropic efforts of he and his wife Barbara. Nicklaus Design continues to lead all global firms with more than 50 courses under construction, and just as many or more courses under development in 35 different countries. Currently, Nicklaus Design has 305 courses open for play in 29 countries and 38 states, with Jack Nicklaus having been personally involved in 250 of those designs.
The Golf Inc. list of the 25 Most Powerful People in Golf, which includes other industry leaders Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Arnold Palmer, was featured in the October issue of the magazine. The Most Powerful list is made up of individuals who have had a notable impact on the golf business, whether it is in golf course development, management or equipment. When creating the list, Golf Inc. focuses on the business side of golf, which is why many high-profile individuals who are known only for their success as players did not make the list.
Golf Inc. published the first list of the Most Powerful People in Golf in 1999. Since then, Nicklaus and Woods are the only people to achieve three consecutive years at No. 1, with Woods taking the top spot from 2001-03 and Nicklaus each year since 2004.
For 35 years, the mission of the Nicklaus Companies has been to enhance the golf experience, and to bring to the national and international consumer golf-related businesses and services that mirror the high standards established in the career and life of Jack Nicklaus. These services include golf-course design, the development of golf and real estate communities, and the marketing and licensing of golf products and services. Nicklaus Design, recognized as the world leader in golf course design, has been involved with 290 courses open for play in 28 countries and 37 states. Of those, Jack Nicklaus has designed, co-designed or re-designed 242 courses around the globe, 45 of which have been ranked in various national or international Top-100 lists. Nicklaus Design currently has 58 courses under construction in 14 different countries, with 32 of those courses outside the United States.
