Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. October 24, 2006: Weed Design has been selected to re-design the Lagoon Course at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. With 36 holes adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, golf has a rich tradition at the Five AAA Diamond resort, dating back to the Ocean Course design in 1928 by Herbert Strong.
The Lagoon Course renovation will mark the completion of a ten-year upgrade of all resort amenities. The resort-wide overhaul was initiated in 1998 by Weed Design’s renovation of the famed Ocean Course. Bobby Weed commented, "We are very pleased to be selected for the Lagoon Course commission and to finish what we started in ’98. The Lagoon Course is a friendly complement to the wind-swept sternness of the Ocean Course. We will upgrade the Lagoon Course’s infrastructure and playability to ensure the golf at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club comprises the finest 36 resort holes to be found on the eastern seaboard."
The Lagoon Course is currently a par 70, just over 5,570 yards. "Our task will be to lengthen the layout and create a user-friendly golf course in a relaxing, timeless setting, framed by inland dunes and live oak hammocks", stated project architect Scot Sherman.
The Lagoon Course was an original nine-hole layout fashioned by Robert Trent Jones in 1961 and expanded to an 18-hole layout in 1977 by Joe Lee. Weed stated that course upgrades will be comprehensive, including infrastructure upgrades of drainage and irrigation along with a new updated grassing palette.
Work is slated to begin next May and ready to open early November.
Weed Design is located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and has completed nine comprehensive start-over renovations.
