Charles Fultz wins GCSAA’s Leo Feser Award
Charles Fultz has been selected to receive the 2006 Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Leo Feser Award for his article, "The great communicators," which appeared in the March 2006 issue of Golf Course Management.
A GCSAA Class A member, Fultz has belonged to the association for 11 years and is the director of golf course management at Shenvalee Golf Course in New Market, Va. He previously presented this information as part of the Innovative Superintendent Sessions at the 2005 GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show in Orlando.
The Leo Feser Award is given annually to the best superintendent-written article published in GCM, the association’s monthly magazine. The award winner is selected by members of the Strategic Communications Committee. Fultz will receive the award the morning of Feb. 22 during the Opening Session of the Golf Industry Show at the Anaheim Convention Center.
In his article, which focused on keys to effectively communicating with superiors and customers, as well as self-marketing, Fultz wrote, "It is the ability to effectively communicate with people who make or break our jobs that is the key to our success. It is what you don’t say or communicate today that may cause you to be unemployed and looking for a job tomorrow. Be proactive, and you will reap the rewards."

"Charlie Fultz conveyed an important message to his peers with that article about how small improvements to communication can make a large difference in successful golf course management," said GCSAA President Sean A. Hoolehan, CGCS. "A valued member of Shenvalee Golf Course’s staff and a valued member of our association, it is a well-deserved honor for him and we look forward to his future contributions."
As the Feser Award winner, Fultz will receive an all-expense paid trip to the 2007 Golf Industry Show, Feb. 22-24 in Anaheim, Calif., and in addition to the recognition at the Golf Industry Show, Fultz’s name will be engraved on a plaque that is on permanent display at GCSAA headquarters.
The Feser award honors the late Leo Feser, a pioneer golf course superintendent and a charter member of GCSAA. Feser is credited with keeping the association’s official publication alive during the Great Depression. For three years (1933-36), he wrote, edited, assembled and published each issue of The Greenkeepers’ Report from his home in Wayzata, Minn. The award was first awarded in 1956 and has been awarded annually since 1977.
