Practice Accessory Review: Daito Golf GreenBerry
by Jeffrey Reed
It’s a little-known fact: Sergio Garcia and I share a common trait. No, I’ve never taped a beer commercial. Yes, the spiffy Spaniard could kick my butt on the links in his sleep. However, we’re both feel golfers, depending more on gut instinct than sprinkler head yardages.
Yet, no matter what your style of golf, the key to scoring well is practice, practice, practice. St. Laurent, Quebec-based Daito Golf, one of my favorite golf industry manufacturers, has a new product which can’t miss when helping you perfect your putting stroke: the GreenBerry, an electronic portable putting trainer.
I know, boys and their toys. Trust me when I say, this is no toy, but it is a riot to use when you’re honing your putting skills. Powered only by a 9V battery, and measuring about the size of that foot-long birdie putt you’ve missed time after time, the GreenBerry is a bonafide star amongst computerized putting aids. In fact, it’s the first electronic putting assistant of its kind.
Made for indoor and outdoor use, the GreenBerry is simple to set up, easy to use, and offers accurate readings of both stroke force and putting distance. This is the secret of its success: the GreenBerry promotes muscle memory in the putting stroke – it holds the key to unlocking the secret to repeating a winning stroke on the greens. Lightweight and slim, the pocket-size GreenBerry will most definitely boost your competitive advantage by giving you the confidence to make better decisions right on the green.
Like many of my fellow Canadians, I spend a great deal of time during the winter months practicing my putting indoors on a carpeted surface, so this is where I calibrated my GreenBerry. Don’t let the word ‘calibrated’ spook you: the GreenBerry is a breeze to initiate. By following easy-to-read instructions, you will set up your GreenBerry for your specific putting surface. I’m a left-handed putter, but this was not an issue with the GreenBerry, which allows for a change in direction of the stroke.
Using this intelligent tool is fun and simple. Set it down on the putting surface, and place the ball so that once it meets the clubface, the ball will travel about three to four inches before passing in front of the GreenBerry’s sensor. The distance between the ball and the sensors should also be about three to four inches. It is also important that you position the ball at the same place each time you putt, in order to get a consistent reading.
In short, the GreenBerry will measure force and distance, instilling muscle memory. The idea here is to allow you to trust your putting – making the necessary stroke for a specific surface and distance. This tiny but mighty tool is based on measurements relating to the surface’s Stimp rating. There are many advantages to using the GreenBerry, including development of a better rhythm and tempo, improvement in adapting stroke force to changing greens, and avoidance of the dreaded yips.
The relationship between green speed and friction is the basis for how the GreenBerry works. This is one solid offering from Daito Golf. I found the readings to be incredibly accurate, and the large digital display makes it easy to read while concentrating on putting. With as MSRP of $200, the GreenBerry makes for a great Christmas gift for the golfer on your list.
You don’t have to use a Daito Golf putter to use the GreenBerry, but it wouldn’t hurt your putting stroke. I’ve been using the Daito Virtuoso putter for the latter part of the 2006 golf season, and am thrilled with the results. Each Daito putter head is CNC milled from solid blocks of cold finished steel, stainless steel or copper, as well as other precious metals such as aircraft aluminum alloy. New from Daito Golf: copper-nickel precision-fit inserts in the Virtuoso; and, the new Stealth AWS (Adjustable Weight System), a mallet-type putter with a teardrop design which is winning many fans.
