Tumble Creek, Prospector Both Make Golfweek Magazine List of Top 50
ROSLYN, Wash. Nov. 7, 2006 â?¦ Firmly establishing itself as one of the premier golf destinations emerging in the United States, Suncadia Resort placed two of its golf courses – Prospector and Tumble Creek – on the Golfweek magazine list of Top 50 Best New Courses.
Tumble Creek, the private course designed by Tom Doak, was ranked No. 22, while Prospector, the resort course designed by Arnold Palmer, was No. 50. The list, which expanded from 40 in 2005, is based on judging by Golfweek’s panel of course raters.
"This is one of the greatest sections of the country to build a golf course with the firs, the various types of pines and the different seasons," Palmer said of Suncadia. "This is just a perfect place to come play golf and enjoy the Northwest."
Tumble Creek, which opened in the spring of 2006, is defined by soaring pines, peaceful woodlands and sunny meadows, as well as the streams and ponds that prosper along the eastern slope of the Cascades. The par 71 remains true to the harmony of its forested environment and is as varied as its powerful Pacific Northwest terrain. Some holes are links-style and roll through open spaces, while others are lined with stands of pines.
Tumble Creek’s layout stretches to 6,928 yards from the back tees and features relatively small greens throughout its plateau layout, each hole a distinctive challenge with classic subtleties. Tees, fairways and greens are all bent grass, while the rough is a mix of blue grass and fescue, an ideal combination for the Suncadia climate, which records four times as much sunshine as the Puget Sound region. There are water hazards on only three holes and the bunkering is subtle, delivering a classic feel to holes that allow the setting speak for itself.
The Prospector Course, only the second original design by Palmer in the State of Washington, is a par 72 that measures 7,100 yards from the deepest of four sets of tees. Its challenges surface amid a dramatic backdrop of Douglas and White firs and ponderosa pines, as well as panoramic mountain views of Mt. Baldy, Domerie Peak and the Thomas and Red mountains.
Suncadia is a 6,400-acre resort community located in the center of a four-season recreation area adjacent to the 2.2 million acre Wenatchee National Forest outside of Roslyn, Wash., 80 miles east of Seattle. Named by LINKS magazine as one of the top 100 premier properties, Suncadia features golf, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and horseback riding in warmer months, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Nearby recreation includes downhill skiing, snowmobiling and intimate Washington wineries for tours and tastings.
Construction began in 2003 and is expected to be complete by 2013 when Suncadia’s amenities will include a resort village, condominium lodge overlooking the Cle Elum River, an 18 room mountain inn, conference facilities, sports center, retail shops, galleries, restaurants, spa, and more than 40 miles of hiking and biking trails. When completed, the resort may include over 3,000 residential units consisting of a wide variety of sites for single-family homes, cabins, and condominiums.
Located within Suncadia is Tumble Creek, a 2,600 acre private community featuring acre-plus lots on the Doak course. Home sites are currently available, with more than 800 Suncadia properties sold already.
The Suncadia resort community will have a third championship golf course in 2008, with the addition of the family friendly Rope Rider course, designed by Jacobsen Hardy Golf Course Design.
Suncadia’s design emphasizes the natural environment and preservation of open space, including a 1,200-acre conservation easement corridor along the Cle Elum River, managed by the Suncadia Conservancy. Suncadia Conservancy is a coalition of Yakama First Nations, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the creators of Suncadia, with the purpose to protect the land "in perpetuity" so it will remain natural and open to the public for generations.
