BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON – November 16, 2006 – Aerotech is adding a pair of new shaft models to its increasingly popular SteelFiber line in 2007. The SteelFiber i110cw ($37) is a 110-gram taper tip constant weight shaft that – like the rest of the SteelFiber line – features a high-modulus graphite core and 59+ miles of steel fiber covering the entire surface of each shaft. Each steel fiber has an 8-micron diameter, which is roughly 1/10th the diameter of a human hair. The result is a shaft bearing graphite’s power and vibration dampening ability, and steel’s stability and control.
SteelFiber i110cw Taper Tip for Irons
The i110cw is constant-weighted, meaning that each shaft in the set weighs exactly the same – regardless of the length, which starts out at 40" for the 3-iron and goes to 36.5" in the wedge. They’re available through Golfsmith, GolfWorks and professional clubfitters around the world. "The i110cw is really going to appeal to the stronger player who’s been using steel-shafted irons but wants to gain some of the benefits of a composite shaft," says Chris Hilleary, president and owner of Aerotech Golf. "This shaft will allow a player to maintain a similar MOI (effort to swing) as their steel shafted club, yet benefit from the reduced vibration which can cause injuries and late round fatigue. Another good candidate for this shaft is that player that went too light with their graphite shafted irons and lost some control but does not want to go back to steel." The SteelFiber i110cw, which is already available in a parallel tip, is offered in R, S and X flexes in both tip configurations.
SteelFiber i125 Shaft for Wedges
The SteelFiber i125 ($37) is a 125-gram wedge-specific shaft that’s 36.5" long. Like most wedge shafts, this is a taper tip model. It fits nicely for players who have either been playing a graphite shaft in their wedges that’s too light or those who have been playing steel-shafted wedges for a long period of time and now may have graphite in the rest of their iron set. "We’ve increased the weight in this shaft not by adding more graphite – which makes the wall thickness too thick and gives the shaft a boardy-feel – but by adding more metal that has five times the density of graphite," says Hilleary. "That way, we’re maintaining the shaft’s playability by minimizing the wall thickness increase. It has a nice stable feel with no harshness. Essentially, it gives you the stability of a steel shafted wedge with the smooth feel of a composite shaft." The SteelFiber i125 is available through Golfsmith, GolfWorks and professional clubfitters around the world.
Hilleary says that in the past year, he’s seen an exponential increase in sales of Aerotech’s heavier weight SteelFiber shafts. "Initially, our big sellers were our 70- and 80-gram iron shafts, indicating that graphite players are accepting and benefitting from the SteelFiber shaft," he says. "Those continue to be our best sellers, but now we’re seeing real growth in the heavier weighted products, which tells us that stronger players are now embracing our technology. And this is really what we’ve been striving for."
The two new Aerotech Golf shaft offerings will be available for purchase beginning in January 2007.
