Continuing its strong golf pedigree, The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel, California hosted the 110th California State Amateur last week.
2021 Champion Noah Woolsey (center), is congratulated by two-time champion Bobby Clampett, left, (1978, 1980) and 2009 champion Geoff Gonzales, right.
Woolsey of Pleasanton, a senior at the University of Washington, defeated Wes Payne, 2 and 1, to win the title.
Clampett, a part-time resident of Carmel, a club member and ambassador of The Preserve Golf Club, and Gonzalez, a member of the club, is a former PGA Tour pro. The course record, which Gonzalez previously held with fellow pro Larry Nelson, was broken twice during the State Am by medalist Christian Banke. He carded an 8-under 64, only bettered the following day with a sizzling 63.
Wandering through 365 acres of towering oaks and rolling savannahs, around wetlands and across seasonal streams, The Preserve Golf Club encounters a full spectrum of nature along with the challenges of a Tom Fazio designed golf course, framed by the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains. The club is the centerpiece of Santa Lucia Preserve, a private community of only 300 homesites situated on 20,000 acres in the scenic coastal mountains east of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif. Residents are devoted to the founders’ mission of habitat conservation, establishing the only community in America with a perpetually endowed nature conservancy.
