ORLANDO, Fla., (Dec. 6 2006) — Golfweek Magazine recently released its annual list of Golfweek’s Best New Courses for 2006.
Golfweek’s Best New Courses list, which appeared in the October 28 issue of Golfweek, recognizes the high quality that architects and builders have delivered at the top 50 public, private and resort courses all of which opened in 2004 and 2005.
"Despite a turndown in golf course development there is a lot of fascinating work that’s debuting," said Golfweek’s Best Courses program director and architecture editor, Bradley S. Klein. "Architects have more time to devote to individual courses with the result that they come on board making an impact."
The No. 1 spot on the list was awarded to Bandon Trails, a Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design that opened in 2005 in Bandon, Ore. Coming in a close second is Massachusetts’s Old Sandwich Golf Club, also designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The Arnold Palmer-designed Suncadia – Prospector Golf Course in Roslyn, Wash. rounds out the Top 50.
The list is derived from the efforts of Golfweek’s course raters. This nationwide team of nearly 400 evaluators regularly surveys over 1,800 golf courses and renders their judgment on the basis of 10 standards of evaluation.
The criteria for evaluating the golf courses, and the Golfweek’s Best New Courses, Classic, Modern, and state-by-state lists, may be found at www.golfweek.com/americasbest.
With the release of this year’s Golfweek’s Best New Courses list, Golfweek is also debuting a change in the program name and has released new program logos. Previously known as Golfweek’s America’s Best Courses, the program name has been changed to Golfweek’s Best Courses and a new diamond shaped logo has been introduced.
"Changing the name or our highly regarded course ranking program from America’s Best to Golfweek’s Best will allow more flexibility and unlimited potential in the future of our course rankings," said Al Snow, director of communications. "The old logo design was due for a much needed facelift and I feel the new logo we have developed reflects the beauty, distinctiveness and design excellence of the golf courses that we recognize as Golfweek’s Best."
