(HERSHEY, PA) â?” It has been a banner year for golf at Hershey Resorts as the Central Pennsylvania destination has twice been honored by national golf publications. In Golfweek’s 2006 list of America’s Best Resort Courses (released this month), Hershey Country Club placed 60th among the top 100 resorts in the country.
The publication based its list on the assessments of 385 panelists nationwide who evaluate golf courses by applying technical standards for judging along with the resort’s design, amenities and setting.
"The best part about a really fine golf resort," said Bradley S. Klein, Golfweek’s architectural editor and ratings coordinator, "is that the golf course isn’t the only thing you want to enjoy."
Hershey Country Club’s West Course, a Maurice McCarthy classic designed in 1930, is an example of a traditional American-style layout and was specifically cited by Golfweek. The 6,860-yard, par-73 course has a rating of 72.6 and slope rating of 130. The signature hole of the West Course is the par-3 fifth, 176 yards, which features the spectacular scenery of High Point Mansion, Milton Hershey’s former home, as its backdrop.
In October, longtime Hershey Country Club head golf professional (1934-1941) Henry Picard was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida, once again putting golf in Hershey on a national stage.
Also in the fall, Hershey Resorts was ranked first on the list of "Best Resort for Family Trips" in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region by Travel + Leisure Golf Magazine.
Hershey Country Club is private, open to members and guests of Hershey Resorts. Following an $18 million renovation, the club’s 40,000 square foot clubhouse debuted this summer. Additionally, Spring Creek Golf Course, a completely renovated, family-friendly, nine-hole layout, re-opened in 2006.
Besides golf, guests can enjoy Hersheypark, Hershey Gardens and Hershey Museum – as well as The Spa At The Hotel Hershey, which features signature chocolate treatments – all within a short distance from the luxurious accommodations at The Hotel Hershey and Hershey Lodge.
