Orange, CT, December 12, 2006 – Race Brook Country Club became the ninth recipient of the Distinguished Club Award at the Connecticut State Golf Association’s 107th Annual Meeting held at Grassy Hill Country Club.
Race Brook Country Club was founded in 1912 and officially opened July 14, 1913. Race Brook once consisted of thirty-six holes but during World War II, one of the eighteen-hole courses was closed. In 1951, nine of these holes were reopened to constitute the present twenty-seven-hole layout.
Race Brook has held several state championships including five CT Open Championships, four CT Amateur Championships and most recently the 2004 New England Amateur Championship. Race Brook also boasts one of Connecticut’s best golf professionals, Frank Selva. Frank has been the head golf professional at Race Brook since 1975 and his tremendous contributions to junior golf will be recognized this coming January when the PGA of America will present him with a national award as "Junior Golf Leader".
Race Brook has provided several quality individuals to volunteer their time with the CSGA. Two of these volunteers are Tom Lane and Edward Silver. Tom Lane served as president of the CSGA in 1993-1994 and also served as president of the New England Golf Association. Edward Silver, who was president of Race Brook in 1988-1989, was the CSGA’s first recipient of the Club Representative of the Year Award.
The CSGA Distinguished Club Award is based on four major criteria. That the club has continually supported and advanced the game of golf; the club has served as a model of commitment to other Connecticut golf clubs; the club has consistently supported amateur golf through club-sponsored activities, hosting state competitions, and member participation in CSGA events; and that the club has consistently provided extraordinary service to the CSGA encouraging volunteers, providing leadership personnel, and hosting meetings, seminars, and special events.
