Singh, Scott Finish 1-2 Trusting Titleist Pro V1x Prototype At Kapalua
Fairhaven, MA (January 8, 2007) – The Mercedes-Benz Championship represented the start of the 2007 golf season and Vijay Singh celebrated by capturing the 30th victory of his illustrious PGA Tour career. Singh edged Titleist ambassador Adam Scott by two shots as both players relied upon the new Pro V1x prototype golf ball for their success at Kapalua.
Singh fired a final round 3-under 70 to finish at 14-under 278, while Scott, who was playing the new golf ball for the first time in competition, closed with three consecutive 69’s to finish at 280. Singh climbed to No.
5 in the Official World Golf Rankings following his win, while Scott rose to No. 3.
Singh and Scott topped a leaderboard that included 7 Titleist golf ball players among the Top 10 finishers, including Titleist ambassador Davis Love III, who won the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro playing the Pro V1x prototype the first week it was available to PGA Tour players last October.
Love tied for 4th at the Mercedes-Benz Championship with Pro V1x player J.B. Holmes. They were followed by Luke Donald (7th/Pro V1x), J.J. Henry (T8/Pro V1x prototype) and David Toms (T8/Pro V1 prototype). Toms, who is the defending champion of this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, closed with a 67, the lowest score of the week on the wind-swept Plantation Course.
At the 34-player, winners-only field, Titleist led the golf ball count with
21 players, three times the nearest competitor with 7. No other competitor had more than two players.
Titleist tied the player count in the iron category with 7, and won the wedge (21) and putter (15) counts. Titleist was second in drivers (9) and fairway metals (10).
