Qatar developments to be showcased at BMW International Open
Doha (QATAR): As part of an ambitious programme of using golf to broadcast Qatar’s message to a global audience, United Development Company (UDC) will tee off its commitment with co-sponsorship of the $2.2 million Commercialbank Qatar Masters.
UDC – the mastermind behind fast-moving developments such as The Pearl-Qatar real estate project – will also showcase its portfolio of outstanding plans with a 100sqm exhibition stand at the 2007 BMW International Open in Munich from June 21-24.
"Golf is a massive worldwide business and we see events like the Commercialbank Qatar Masters and the BMW International Open as perfect opportunities to inform a global audience and potential investors of just how Qatar is developing as a major sporting, business and leisure destination," said Walid Al Saadi, UDC Chief Executive Officer.
"Naturally, we are also delighted to be playing a key role at a time when the Commercialbank Qatar Masters celebrates its tenth anniversary with one of the strongest line-up of players ever seen in the Middle East. We are certainly looking forward to the opportunities our association will bring."
To be held at Doha Golf Club from January 25-28, the Commercialbank Qatar Masters – co-sanctioned by the PGA European Tour and the Asian Tour – has the support of a clutch of worldwide brands, while maintaining much valued backing from Qatar’s own thriving business community.
The strong support of UDC drew particular praise from Commercialbank Group CEO Andrew Stevens.
"There is tremendous synergy in what we are doing with our investment in the Commercialbank Qatar Masters and what UDC is doing with their far-reaching plans for the growth of the State of Qatar," he said.
"Our aim is to take this tournament to new, more professional levels and draw global attention to the development and future potential of Qatar, while a project like The Pearl-Qatar is one of the most prestigious in the world and focuses the worldwide media spotlight on the country."
As play gets underway in the UAE at one of three consecutive PGA European Tour events in the Middle East, the final touches are being made to the new and improved facilities at the Doha Golf Club prior to the arrival of players such as Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen and Jeev Milkha Singh.
"After the massive success of the Asian Games, excitement for the Commercialbank Qatar Masters has never been greater and I am convinced we are about to witness one of the finest and most professional sporting events ever seen in the city," said Hassan Al Nuami, President of the Qatar Golf Association (QGA).
