Resort’s two award-winning courses to challenge top players May 30-June 3.
WINTERGREEN, VA—Championship competition returns this spring to Wintergreen Resort, which will introduce the Wintergreen National Amateur Championship, a premier event designed for the elite men and women amateur golfers in the United States.
Scheduled for May 30-June 3, 2007, the Wintergreen National Amateur is an individual 54-hole stroke-play tournament to be played at the resort’s two award-winning golf courses – Devils Knob and Stoney Creek – which have a rich tournament history that includes hosting the Virginia State Amateur, the Virginia State Mid-Am and Virginia State Junior, as well as a Canadian Tour event.
The Wintergreen National Amateur field is open to men with a USGA handicap index of 5.0 or less and to women with a USGA handicap index of 10.0 or less, with a maximum field of 144 players. The name of the winner is to be engraved on the championship’s perpetual trophy, with individual trophies to be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.
The tournament competitor’s package includes an official Wintergreen National Amateur golf shirt, golf hat and golf towel, plus one dozen Titleist ProV golf balls. Practice rounds are available May 30-31, with competition schedule for June 1-2-3, 18 holes each day. Caddies are available upon request.
Entry fee is $125. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. (Eastern) May 14, 2007.
Stoney Creek Golf Course is the resort’s 27-hole valley layout designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. Flowing through the historic Rockfish Valley, it incorporates natural springs and native habitat, including Lake Monocan and Stoney Creek, with all three nines presenting elevation changes and large, deceptively contoured greens. Tournament play is to be on the Monocan and Shamokin nines for a par 72 that will play to 7,005 yards.
Devils Knob Golf Course, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006, is a co-design by the father-son team of Ellis and Dan Maples. The highest course in Virginia, Devils Knob is an exquisite mountaintop layout at 3,850 feet elevation known for cool summer temperatures and outstanding tee-to-green conditions. The par 70 is only 6700 yards from the back tees, but it is not a pushover, with a slope rating of 138.
One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier year-round golf destinations, Wintergreen Resort is located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where year-round golf is offered — even during ski season — and soothing luxury is readily available at the Wintergarden Spa.
