Galloway Township, NJ — Noted golf course architect Stephen Kay of Stephen Kay â?¢ Doug Smith Golf Course Design was the recipient of the 2006 Traditions Award, presented by the New Jersey Golf Course Owners Association (NJGCOA). The award is presented by the NJGCOA for dedication to the preservation of the traditions of golf in New Jersey.
Kay has long been recognized as one of the region’s preeminent golf course architects. He has designed or renovated more than 25 golf courses in New Jersey since he established his business in 1983. His New Jersey designs include Blue Heron Pines West course, Harbor Pines, Scotland Run, Architects Club, Emerald Links and Stanton Ridge. Blue Heron Pines, Harbor Pines, Scotland Run and Architects Club have all received national acclaim. Among the NJ courses for which has done major renovations are Galloping Hill, Ashbrook, Shackamaxon, Beacon Hill, Newton, Linwood, Greenacres and Paramus.
"We are proud to have selected Stephen as the recipient of this award," said Robert Twomey, president of the NJGCOA. "He has made unique and exceptional contributions to golf in New Jersey through his course design and renovation work, as well as his passion and respect for the game."
The Traditions Award was established by the NJGCOA in 2004. Previous recipients include New Jersey State Golf Association Executive Director Steve Phoel in 2004, and the Fraser and Siok families in 2005. The Frasers and Sioks are the owners of Mays Landing Golf Club and the former owners of Atlantic City Country Club.
Kay is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and the National Golf Foundation. He serves as a Rules Official for the Metropolitan (NY) Golf Association and the Golf Association of Philadelphia.
