CHARLOTTE – The Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Golf Tour kicks off its ninth season in Charlotte in February, with Harris Teeter supermarkets returning as title sponsor.

This is Harris Teeter’s sixth year of sponsoring the tour, which caters to amateur golfers age 50 and older in 22 markets ranging from central Florida to northern Virginia. As part of the sponsorship agreement, Harris Teeter gift cards will be a key part of the prize structure throughout the year and at the tour championship.

"Our demographics blend well with Harris Teeter’s demographics," said tour president Dennis McCormac. "And many of the guys find it beneficial to bring home grocery gift cards instead of golf merchandise."

Charlotte is the tour’s flagship division, and this year’s Charlotte schedule features 22 tournaments, beginning Feb. 21 at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe and ending Nov. 6 at Raintree Country Club.

Other top-notch venues include: Rock Barn Golf & Spa, Pine Lake Country Club, Rocky River Golf Club, Lake Hickory Country Club, Country Club of Salisbury, River Run, Cowans Ford Country Club and NorthStone. All tournaments are on weekdays and begin at 10 a.m.

The tour is open to seniors with handicaps from 0-20, with participants placed in flights according to handicaps. Competition is stroke play, using full USGA rules.

The top four finishers in each flight at every tourney win gift certificates from Edwin Watts Golf locations in Charlotte, while all earn points toward a championship in their flight.

Those who finish in the top 10 in points in their flight receive invitations to the 2007 Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour Championship in Hilton Head. The championship is Nov. 13-14 at the 54-hole Port Royal Plantation after eight years at various courses in the Pinehurst area.

Tour membership fee is $70 and includes a tour gift pack, plus reduced rates on weekly practice rounds. Entry fees are $60 per event, and include cart and green fees, range balls and prizes. Golfers may join the tour at any time during the year.
