WINTERGREEN, VA — By combining the teaching techniques of major college golf coaches with high-tech video swing analysis, and then blending them with swimming, tennis and other fun summer activities, the Wintergreen Resort Golf Academy has introduced a junior program that targets the development of each student, on and off the golf course.
"While golf is a huge focus of our junior program, our approach is to immerse students in activities that allow them to widen their perspective of the game," said Sean Taylor, Director of Golf at Wintergreen Resort and head of the Wintergreen Golf Academy, which uses both of the resort’s two award-winning golf courses – Devils Knob and Stoney Creek.
That philosophy is evident in the types of program offered by the Wintergreen Golf Academy, which all include lodging and access to Wintergreen Resort amenities:
â?¢The Coaches Camp Junior Golf School (5 days, 4 nights) includes instruction from coaches at the University of Notre Dame that covers the complete swing, as well as course management and strategy. It also includes daily outdoor adventures off the course, including swimming at Lake Monocan.
â?¢The Parent-Child School (2 days, 2 nights) includes family oriented instruction that allows moms and dads to join the experience and learn together with their sons and daughters. Under the guidance of Golf Academy staff, participants follow the ModelGolf swing system, learn golf-specific stretching exercises and have time for the Wintergreen Resort Aquatics & Fitness Center (with sauna, steam room, Whirlpools and indoor swimming pool)
â?¢The Golf & Tennis School (5 days, 4 nights) features instruction by certified PGA and USTA professionals, combining the golf courses with the indoor tennis complex at the award-winning Wintergreen Tennis Resort. Available in weekly and daily packages, students also get lunch and swim time in the Stoney Creek pool.
One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier year-round golf destinations, Wintergreen Resort is located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where year-round golf is offered — even during ski season — and soothing luxury is readily available at the Wintergarden Spa.
The Wintergreen Golf Academy features certified instructors for ModelGolf, a proven system that uses complete computerized swing analysis and club fitting recommendations, as well as individualized drills, to get premium results.
Stoney Creek Golf Course is the resort’s 27-hole valley layout designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. Flowing through the historic Rockfish Valley, it incorporates natural springs and native habitat, including Lake Monocan and Stoney Creek, with all three nines presenting elevation changes and large, deceptively contoured greens. Tournament play is to be on the Monocan and Shamokin nines for a par 72 that will play to 7,005 yards.
Devils Knob Golf Course, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006, is a co-design by the father-son team of Ellis and Dan Maples. The highest course in Virginia, Devils Knob is an exquisite mountaintop layout at 3,850 feet elevation known for cool summer temperatures and outstanding tee-to-green conditions.
