AUSTIN, Texas — The Golf Foundation of Texas proudly announced the winner of its 2007 financial scholarship is Austin Griffin of Cuero, Texas. Created to educate and inspire Texans that have an interest in golf, the Golf Foundation of Texas (GFT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting educational opportunities for the purpose of promoting golf and fostering interest in the game.
The award is a $3,000 scholarship for outstanding Texas high school seniors who demonstrate a love for the game, and who are planning to attend Texas-accredited institutions. The scholarship will be presented at the 2007 Golf Expo, held at the Lester E. Palmer Events Center in Austin, Texas, on March 9-11, 2007.
"We’re very excited to provide this scholarship to Austin, and we want to make a brighter future for other Texas students too," says Nick Spiropoulos, executive director for the Golf Foundation of Texas. "Our primary goal is to provide young Texans with educational opportunities through the advancement of golf and, as more golfers and golf-based businesses come together through the Foundation or by making a contribution, we will make many more of these scholarships possible."
One of the GFT’s primary fund-raising events for scholarships is the new Golf Expo which has already been described as the premier event for the golfing lifestyle in Central Texas. The 2007 Golf Expo will feature the best of Texas golf, showcasing a 26,000-square-foot exhibit hall brimming with the latest in golf products and services, contests, and special events for those who want to jump start their golf game. The Golf Expo will provide exhibitors and sponsors a cost-effective way to reach a target audience of more than 15,000 Central Texas golf enthusiasts and an unprecedented opportunity to build brand recognition and loyalty among Texas golfers.
Austin Griffin, 18, is a senior at Cuero High School and a participate in the Dual Credit Program at Victoria Community College. Griffin is now playing in his fourth year on the Cuero High School golf team, during which time he has been the district champion each year and the regional champion once and he has led Cuero to three district championships, one regional championship and three appearances in the state tournament. In addition to his golf achievements, Austin is a member of the National Honor Society.
"The impact golf has had on my life requires few words. Though it is not whom I am, it is what I do," says Griffin, who picked up his first set of clubs while in the fifth grade, and who admits to being hooked on the game from the second he made contact with the ball. "Golf has taught me that hard work and tenacity do pay dividends. My dream is to play golf in college, play golf professionally and one day repay my parents for letting me follow my dream."
