Sorenstam Sets Sites on Becoming Groundbreaking Force in Golf Course Design

February 19, 2007, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Widely acclaimed as the world’s best female player in the history of golf, LPGA golfer Annika Sorenstam spoke with TravelGolf.com recently about her newest project in 2007 and her goals of knocking down doors for women in golf course design.

In an exclusive interview with senior writer Chris Baldwin following an appearance at the January 26th USGA press conference in Orlando, Florida, Sorenstam discussed her plans of approaching course design with the same determination and hard work that has helped her win 10 majors during her 12-year professional career. Sorenstam has already completed her first course, Mission Hills Golf Club in China, and the native of Sweden has already started another project in South Africa. Her first American task comes with the redesign of Patriots Point Links, a waterfront course in Charleston, S.C.

"Annika Sorenstam is often criticized for showing little emotion so it was interesting to see the obvious passion she has for this issue," said Baldwin. "Sorenstam clearly believes she can make a Jack Nicklaus-like impact for women pro golfers in course design. It’s not that farfetched to say it seems more important to her than her playing career now. Whether she can become the first female household name in the male-dominated field of course design promises to be one of golf’s more compelling story lines over the next 10 years."
